The horse had some of the most talented fillies in the world and they foaled some of the best horses in the world. I'm not saying he was not on steroids as the steroids got worse later on. But steroids or not the horse was a freak The only one who could answer the steroid question is the trainer, vet or groom!

What happened to cause him to lose this race? Does anyone know? Was he tired?

To everyone BUT DasKindwarimBrunnen - his knowledge about Secretariat is just flawed and...he's an internet "hater" - not worth a moment of your time. He is enjoying getting you all riled up. I've seen Secretariat and he was big - very big. Until his death the size of his heart was not known. Secretariat's reputation isn't threatened by a naysayer like this guy.

Like doped sportlers of today need a hard workout too ??!! Only doping doesnt bring you to the aim .. you need to do smth for your muscles, too. And the X-factor is just an unprooved myth ... someone said that some years ago, but it is a myth an no proven fact.

the "x-factor" is a stupid myth and today nobody believes in this ... . Secretariat was a doped horse !!!

I knew there was a reason. A horse like Onion couldn't beat Big Red normally. Thanks! :)

I can't believe this. What happened? It's like a different horse out there! Oh well, Secretariat beats Onion by a mile next time - Onion doesn't even rate.

If that's the greatest racehorse of all time, I'm a monkey's bum. Mill Reef's only defeats were against Brigadier Gerard and My Swallow. Brigadier Gerard's only defeat was against Roberto. Secretariat in his prime lost to Onion. Go figure.

sham trainer said the same thing , after the race at the woods memorial race (excuses excuses) and as we all know now the rest is history.(poor sham was badly beaten by sec an the whip) lol

How many excuses can people come up with to "explain away" Secretariat's loss to Onion or the various other horses that defeated him?

  • ault3333 Says:

When any horse past or present can beat secretariat records in the most important races in north america only then he is better than secretariat. For these are races design for the best to compete ,three diffrent courses ,distances ,turfs, in a matter of weeks .Secretariat worked and trained very hard for these races, that in the end made it look so easy. That is why some people say what they say ,but history proves them wrong over an over An as time goes by we come to realise sec. achievement

Good effort by Secretariat. He was second best on this day. Onion deserves full props for his victory. Let's just leave it at that.

Simple proof that Secretariat wasn't right for BOTH the Wood (Abscess) and Whitney (Virus) 1-1/8 mile races were his 1:49+ times...are you kidding me??? In the 1-1/8 mile Arlington Invitational, SEC "coasted" to a 9/10 length win in a fine 1:47 which easily would have been better had he been tested in the stretch run. Regarding the 1-1/8 mile Marlboro Cup, his remarkable 1:45-2/5 World Record time has only been bested by 1/5 of a second since. Stop wasting your time with these losers!!!

Hmm see what J O Tobin did to Seattle Slew; see what Ravens Pass did to Curlin; see what Tolomeo did to John Henry; see the entire career of Mineshaft; see the fact that Conduit recorded faster times than Sec despite racing thousands of miles from home. Horses who can't make it in the top grade in Europe have thrashed the best Americans on their home ground. Did I mention Arcangues? Mill Reef would have beaten Sec: Brigadier Gerard at his best would have annihilated him.

BG beat Mill Reef, so I don't think Secretariat would have given him any bother.

I firmly believe that Secretariat was a wonderful racehorse, and the best American Thoroughbred of 1973. I'm also pretty sure that Brigadier Gerard would have chewed him up and spat him out.

You don't write a book about a horse telling lies without someone calling you out on it. Name one veteran horseman who ever called Nack out on his writings. Steve Haskins editor of Blood horse also knew he was sick. Read his article titled 'The unbeatable horse'. Guess he was full of shit as well.& should not be taken seriously. Right Tiger Boy? The reason you won't take Nack's seriously is because you don't like Secretariat & don't want the truth known?

  • rscarbro100 Says:

Are you saying Nack told a big lie to Ray? Did Marshall Cassidy back up Nack's claim with another lie? They were not the only ones who witness it. Nack wrote his book after Secretariat ran. He had no obilgation to Penny or no one when he wrote the book. What horse do you worship? Bet your favortie horse got beaten more than once and have a bag full of excuses for him. Am I right? Nack's career was not just in horse racing.
