I was there for that race. My friend who saw Slew in his previous race told me "your going to see a champion today" and he was right! For me he was the greatest horse of my life, both on and off the track.
that was when the general public became aware of the ultimate frontrunner Seattle Slew. Yes he made real good horses look bad, that is what the great ones do.
AWESOME PERFORMANCE! by the one and only SEATTLE SLEW. Man he was incredible! Immediately after the race, Leroy Jolley offered Jim Hill 1 million dollars for The Slew. That might be about 3.8 million in today's dollars!
Many thanks for posting this. I remember watching this race and being awed by Slew's pure speed and catch-me-if-you-can style. For the Moment was a Leroy Jolley horse and pretty good, already a Grade 1 winner and 4 straight wins, but Slew left him in the dust.
I immediately bet my friend $20 that Slew would win the Triple Crown. LOL. That was a stupid wager in terms of value but hey, I collected.
The 1:34 2/5 broke the record for a two-year-old running a mile.
