Wow I knew someone had this on tape somewhere. I was 7 years old when I
moved to Miami. It was February of 1979 and I vividly remember how much
publicity this horse was getting and maybe winning the Triple Crown in
horse racing wasn't such a big deal as it was about to happen for a third
year in a row. People now think California Chrome is dominant, which he is
but it wouldn't be shocking if he lost the Belmont. I just see him fading
in the stretch, but the competition is so weak; he just may do it. People
were stunned when this horse lost the Belmont. He should have been the
Triple Crown winner. As great as Secretariat was, I believe Bid was a
better racer over his career. Secretariat lost some pretty big races and I
have a problem with people making excuses for his loses. Yes he won the
Crown in ridiculous style, but he got his ass beat three times and hardly
looked great in doing so. And it wasn't a sure thing that he would be great
as a 4 year old, so you can't make that argument. Granted no horse would
have beaten him on Belmont Day, but can say that about Easy Goer's Gotham.
Anyone who saw that when it happened will tell you this horse just might be
the best ever. Didn't happen. Bid proved he was the best three years in a
row. That my friends will never happen again.
The Bid is part of American horse racing lexicon which describes a horse in
comment section of past performances making a bold middle move. One of many
unbelievable performances!
Many thanks. I've looked for a tape of this race for many years to post on
my own channel. Never had any luck. Gulfstream blew me off. Someone told me
they may have lost old videos in a fire.
I'd still like to see the original call with Ross Morton but this may be as
good as we'll do, and very helpful, especially since it includes post-race
analysis and interviews with Franklin and Delp.
And that's why The Bid was one of the greatest ever to step onto a track of
any era. He overcame the problems created by his own jockey and still won
convincing.
