Emirates Melbourne Cup G1 3U OPEN ($6,200,000), 3200m 3:20.84 | |
Race Synopsis: The French had made a wonderful break through the year before and backed it up with Mikel Delzangles entire Dunaden. He came out of the same lead up being the Geelong Cup and carried the same weight as his fellow French galloper Americain after both ran in the Kergorlay as well. The other storyline here was Craig Williams was booked for the ride but got suspended so there was another French influence as Christophe Lemaire flew in for his first ever ride at Flemington. He jumped well and sat in the second half of the field which had become the norm in recent years. Glass Harmonium missed away but Illo and Precedence strode clear by halfway but before that at the post, Hawk Island was badly checked and one to cop some backwash was Red Cadeaux which became very significant later. As has been the want in the last few Cups, they came out far and wide. Stretched across the track Lucas Cranach took over at the 400m but the quinella charged out wide. Red Cadeaux clearly headed the winner but Dunaden fought back once Lemaire switched hands with the whip and on the line it was the closest finish in history. |
The closest Cup in history won by Dunaden over Red Cadeaux
