Emirates Melbourne Cup G1 3U OPEN ($6,200,000), 3200m 3:20.30 | |
Race Synopsis: A deserved Melbourne Cup victory to Fiorente and trainer Gai Waterhouse atoning for the defeat by Green Moon last year. Given an inspired ride by Damien Oliver, the favourite settled down in 15th position one off the fence. When the pace slackened mid race Oliver was looking to improve his position between horses putting himself into striking distance cornering in the centre of the course. He loomed up ominously on straightening and quickened up well to hit the front at the 250 metres but then was made to work the whole way to the line by the runner up Red Cadeaux on his inside. Red Cadeaux was very good in defeat once again. He was brought across from barrier 23 to race in
12th position on the outside of his old foe Dunaden. He was on the go three wide improving his position from the 1400 metres on the back of Mourayan. Left in front on cornering he committed early in the straight going clear off Mount Athos to take a clear lead. He stayed on strongly the whole way to the line gamely, going under to Fiorente by only three quarters of a length. A most admirably effort. Mount Athos was given every possible chance by Craig Williams from barrier 22. He managed to slot into fifth one of the fence in the run. He had a lovely run back towards the fence and put in a challenge at the top of the straight. He levelled out on his effort but stayed on strongly hold a narrow third. Simenon raced three wide on the outside of Fiorente in the run. He made his move ahead of Fiorente ranging up at the top of the straight, looking a winning chance on cornering before staying on resolutely for fourth. Dandino was very good in defeat. He raced on the inside of Fiorente in the run. He got shuffled back to be fourth last on cornering scouting for runs. When clear he made many lengths in the straight to be closest at the line, a good effort. Fawkner was also good. He came from last and widest on the turn to put in a good sprint before having his stamina fully tested over the concluding stages. |

Great run from Simonen. went from winning two minor stake at Ascot in one week during the meet last summer, to a placing in the Melbourne cup not beaten by much. Great run from him.

It's always easy to say in hindsight, but how does a stayer the quality of Red Cadeaux start at 60's? Absolute blinder of a run. He killed my first 4... I had him in to run 3/4th but not for 2nd. I had 20% too :( Run of the race is a close call IMO... RC & Mount Athos both ran massive races. Ride of the race goes to DO though, hands down. And while there were so very good runs among the local contingent the rift between the Euro stayers and ours is as wide as ever.

In many cases there is nothing that can be done. It depends on the break and how much damage has been done to the surrounding soft tissue. If blood vessels, tendons, or nerves are damaged beyond repair, then you cannot supply significant blood flow to the leg, if a suspensory ligament or tendon is completely severed, it cannot be re-attached.I know, one of my horses broke it's leg in the paddock,& after 5 different opinions. My mare could not be saved,no matter what anyone did.

At the 2000 metre mark. She stumbles badly, and her jockey pulls her up instantly. She is about 4th last at the back of the pack. Horrible.

Got greedy and bet my money on Mount Athos for the win - I should have bet for a place. Feel a bit gutted

The Melbourne Cup is, like our Grand National, a great spectacle. I have been to Flemington Park for the " race that stops a nation." However, it is, like our Grand National, also a handicap; primarily for horses below group class who generally fail to compete at the highest level. Fiorente, once trained Sir Michael Stoute was an average performer. Red Cadeaux likewise. Mount Athos flatters to deceive and was yet again fully exposed in this year's Ascot Gold Cup. A little perspective please.

Christy I'm in the UK and the bookie here offered me 10/1 for Red Cadeaux to run second, as I didn't think it could get up and win. I took the 2nd place odds with a little £10 bet so I couldn't complain.

...and beaten by a perfect year long preparation. Red Cadaeux had 1.5kgs more weight and a wide barrier to contend with. Red Cadeaux was a winner IMHO. I have the utmost of respect for that horse and its associates.

lol no if you look at dandino almost last before straight to run 5th watch him at the straight sooo good had the second fastest 400 metres out of everyone fiorente had first by a slight margin but if dandino was in a better place it would've been running 1st or second

Good reason for there being barely a mention of Secret Compass, Daniel, it was not in the field!
Daniel Johnson Says:

Verema and Secret Compass, barley a mention of either horse. Secret Compass was making a wonderful charge to the front. Stupid fools covering up these tragedies. Look what they did for Ruffian. Ruffian died because she re broke her leg when waking up after surgery. They put a horse in a pool of water now so that won't happen. If the horse is worth enough money that is. They make up all these excuses, "oh there was nothing we could do! they just don't want to spend the money. Blue Bloods
