| Race Synopsis: Outstanding colt Pierro returned in good style winning here at his first run since being placed in the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) in November. He was handily placed by Nash Rawiller in fourth place one off the rails, before being switched wide on straightening and getting to the lead, in the middle of the track, at the 200m but had to dig deep to hold on for a game half head win. The previously unbeaten Rebel Dane began slowly and was last in the ten-horse field, before making ground along the rails to settle seventh on the fence. He was six lengths from the leader at the turn, got a good run through at the 300m, moved to second at the 200m and finished gamely for a very good second. Proisir raced in second spot one off the rails, about three lengths from the leader (Mulaazem) before challenging at the 300m and holding on for a sound first-up third. Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner It’s A Dundeel was a distant eighth on the outer and under pressure from the 800m but he responded late, making considerable ground for an excellent first-up fourth. Proverb ran on from the tail of the field for fifth while Ashokan was handy on the rails before tiring for sixth. | |
