R6 EAGLE FARM07 June 2014
Tatts Group J.J. Atkins G1 2 OPEN ($505,000), 1600m 1:35.39
Race Synopsis: Almalad put up a most determined effort to score a narrow but well deserved victory coming back late in the straight after being headed, to win by a long head. He was used up from his wide barrier (9) to share the lead with Time For War and they ran the field along at a good speed. Tommy Berry elected to take his mount four to five horses off the fence on turning for home leaving a gap for Brazen Beau back to his inside. He was headed by that horse and looked beaten but rallied under hard riding to rally at the 100m before putting his head back in front in the final strides. It was a very good effort by a underrated and tough two-year-old. Brazen Beau was good in defeat. He was away well from the gates today and settled down in fourth position on the fence. He got a lovely run through between the leader and the winner and hit the front at the 250m looking the certain winner but the winner kicked strongly on his outside and he just could not match him late. He lost nothing in defeat and only went under narrowly. A good effort. Looks Like The Cat came from sixth on the fence behind the runner up. He made good ground in the straight back towards the fence but disappointed for a run and was forced to be switched across heels at the 100m. He finished quickly when clear late to only just go under. A good effort. Pressing came from seventh one off the fence over racing a little in the middle stages in the first time blinkers. He came wide on the home turn and finished on strongly on the outside to grab fourth right on the line. Careless raced in fifth position on the outside of Looks Like The Cat. He took the home turn four and five wide before battled on gamely for fifth only going under by two lengths. A sound effort.
