Race Synopsis: Hauraki put up a very smart effort in winning here, his first at Group One after being placed on five previous occasions at that level. He settled back in last place in the 13-horse field from his wide barrier (10) and was conceding the tearaway leader (Fabrizo) about 15 lengths at the 600m. He angled deep at the 300m and then came with a strong finish to grab a narrow but impressive win. Dibayani was a distant fifth coming to the 600m. He set out after the leader on turning for home, hit the front at the 50m only to be overtaken nearing the post for second after running a bold race. Mackintosh raced back in fourth place, went to a distant third on straightening, took a narrow lead at the 50m and then fought well for a close-up third. Happy Clapper was a distant sixth nearing the home turn, commenced his bid from the 300m and kept finishing well for fourth, beaten less than a length. Le Romain raced back in third place, one off the rails. He was a distant second at the home turn and then battled on well for (1.2 lengths) fifth. McCreery raced back in seventh place, switched wider on straightening and kept making ground, without threatening, to finish (1.6 lengths) sixth while the strong-running leader Fabrizio, who set up a big lead in the mid-stages, tired over the latter stages to finish (3.5 lengths) tenth after running his first 1000m in a fast 58.20. |
