| Race Synopsis: Chautauqua staged a brilliant performance in winning his second successive TJ Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m). He was ridden quietly as usual and remained at the tail of the 15-horse field to the home turn before switching widest of all rounding the home turn. He then showed his wonderful turn of foot, dashed to the front at the 50m and went on to score impressively. It was his fourth win at Group One level. Fell Swoop was smartly away and raced outside the leader (Our Boy Malachi). He moved up well at the 200m, briefly hit the front nearing the 50m but was then overwhelmed by the lateclosing winner to take a very good second. English settled back in 11th place from her wide barrier (14). She moved up wide out on straightening, put in a strong run from the 200m and finished well for a really good third. Our Boy Malachi went to the front and pinched a good break on turning for home. He was only headed on passing the 100m and then held on well for a good fourth. The favourite Exosphere raced in sixth place until nearing the home turn, was then under pressure and eventually finished 11th and was reported to have pulled up lame. | |
