Empire Rose Stakes G1 3UFM OPEN ($502,500), 1600m 1:34.86 | |
Race Synopsis: The Chris Waller-trained mare Shillelagh took out her second Group 1, 1600m Flemington success in scoring here. She settled back in 12th place, on the rails. James McDonald angled for inside runs on turning for home, got through on the inner from the 300m, hit the front at the 100m and then went on to win well by just over a length. Bring Me Roses settled in tenth place, improved (between runners) at the home turn, put in a good run from the 300m and kept running on well to get second in a photo. Fundamentalist was quickly away from her wide barrier (14), raced outside the leader (Shumookh), got to the front at the 200m and then fought well for third, staging a good effort after working early on. Bella Martini was a handy fifth, improved (deep) coming to the home turn and then held on nicely for (1.6 lengths) fourth, just in front of Invincible Gem who battled very gamely for (1.7 lengths) fifth while the talented three-year-old fillies Amphitrite raced midfield (on the rails) but failed to gain clear running for an untested (3.1 lengths) 11th and Oohood raced in sixth place and was also held up in traffic in the straight for (3.2 lengths) 12th. |
