Hey, AP Indy got there just 10 lengths slower than his legendary Grandpa's still current world record - that's damn fast!

What could have been had AP not been scratched from the 92 derby ? He and Arazi were foaled the same year. That had the makings of a great rivalry after Arazi's 91 Breeders Cup Juvenile performance. Unfortunately we'll never know.

What a great race, and what a great sire he turned out to be!

He is slotted to breed with Zenyatta. What a super freak horse should that be?

Awesome race, gotta love the 1 1/2 mile Belmont's. Pine Bluff hung in there for quite a while, good effort against a great horse, AP Indy.

I actually got to pet him at Lane's End in 2007. At 18 he could still beat most Grade ! runners today. What a thrill.

AP Indy was pure class from the moment he was born.I believe there have been a number better than him over the last 20 years, but he ran biggest on the biggest stages and I really believe he was improving at the end of his 3 year old season. Perhaps had he stayed in training at 4 he would have displayed the speed/brilliance of horses like Cigar, Skip Away, Ghostzapper, Sunday Silence, Easy Goer, or Holy Bull. Still I rank him one of the best 3 year olds of the past 20 years.

A.P. Indy has been such a huge success as a sire and has guaranteed the Bold Ruler line will endure in the 21st century.

Nice bold pick but I am pretty sure that the last two Belmont winners came from the Dam Better Than Honour. A.P. Indy only added to Rags to Riches but the Dam is the hot Prospect in Terms of Winning the Belmont. Casino Drive who just won the Peter Pan at Belmont hopes to follow in those hoofsteps. Good Luck

It's a shame that he got injured the morning of the Derby that year. There's no doubt in my mind that he would have swept the Trople Crown had he been able to compete in the Derby and the Preakness. He is definately one of the greatest if not the greatest horse to come along in the last 30 years.

I predict that Adriano will follow Rags To Riches in winning the Belmont!! They are bred to follow Daddy's hoofsteps

I agree with that statement. He probably had the greatest bloodline of any horse. Triple Crown Papa "Seattle Slew" Triple Crown Granddaddy "Secretariat". Great horse.

I guess bloodlines do matter. A.P.Indy's 2:26 flat is the closet time to his Grandfather's ("Big Red") time of 2:24 flat in the Belmont. On yeah, can't forget Easy Goer with the same time of 2:26 flat in 1989.

I am so impressed with this victory of AP Indy's. As big a fan as I am of his grandpa Secretariat, this race was all Papa Slew, that gritty toughness that never gave up and that had always had an extra tank of gas hiding there waiting to be tapped. Love it!

I don't know who would have won in a match race between Indy and Swale, but they were both among the greats, and I hope Indy is remembered at least as much as a runner as he is (rightly, of course) as a stallion.

  • SWALE1984 Says:

    A. P. Indy and Swale were both sons of the legendary and immortal Seattle Slew. A.P. Indy ran the Belmont in 2:26 flat, while Swale ran it in 2:27 1/5. Swale was also running in 100 degree heat and humidity. That makes his final time incredibly impressive.

  • shellpen10 Says:

Swale was a beautiful horse---so sad that he died so young....Ran the second fastest Belmont...had those Secretariat genes..
