| Race Synopsis: Kris Lees-trained four-year-old Le Romain scored his second Group One win after winning the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) last season. He was given a good trip by Hugh Bowman, racing in seventh place, one off the rails behind a moderate tempo (first 1000m 62.39) before improving nearing the home turn. He challenged at the 300m and proved too strong in the closing stages to win, seemingly with something in hand. McCreery was well back in 12th place, on the rails, but was blocked in the straight until getting a split at the 100m. He then finished well along the rails for a late-closing second, looking somewhat unlucky. Tivaci went back from his wide barrier (12), settled near last in the 16-horse field before fanning deep on straightening. He then ran on well to take a good third. The United States settled near the tail of the field, was shuffled back to last at 300m, then switched deep and caught the eye with his late-closing (1.2 lengths) fourth. The well supported Mackintosh had a good trip in fourth place, moved up well at the home turn, took a narrow lead at the 200m but he then battled on over the closing stages to finish (1.4 lengths) fifth after appearing to have every chance. | |
