Darley T J Smith Stakes G1 3U OPEN ($2,585,750), 1200m 1:11.04 | |
Race Synopsis: Chautauqua was ridden quietly as usual and remained near last in the ten-horse field to the home turn. Tommy Berry took him to the centre of the track on straightening and Chautauqua then sprinted quickly, going to third at the 100m. He then kept finishing strongly and got up just in time to win by a very narrow margin but in impressive fashion, nevertheless. Lord Of The Sky raced outside the leader (Rain Affair) and both noted front-runners surprisingly ran along at moderate tempo (first 600m 35.12). Lord Of The Sky took the lead at the 100m and was only caught in the last few strides for (nose) second. The favourite Terravista was sixth, one off the rails. He moved up well rounding the home turn and looked a strong threat at the 200m but just kept battling on from that point to finish (2.1 lengths) third. Fontelina ran on quite well for (3.3 lengths) fourth while Lankan Rupee disappointed. He was third on the rails to the home turn but tired in the straight for (7.3 lengths) ninth. |

Would love to see this horse up the straight in the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot... or even the July Cup. Serious sprinter who looks like a genuine miler to me.
