I cannot get over how fast he passed the two leaders on the far turn.

I wish there could have been a race between Damascas, Dr. Fager. and Buckpasser when they were all in their prime (at the same time)

I saw this race in person. Damascus was one hell of a horse.

Was awarded the Horse of Year in 1967 over Dr. Fager and Buckpasser; won the Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Wood Memorial,Travers, Dwyer, and Woodward Stakes, despite having a dosage index (BOOOOO!) of 6.20. Will always on my greatest hits list!

Don't know the level of competition he was facing but that move was similar to Big Reds in the Preakness. Just gives you chills with the acceleration. Damascus proved he was an outstanding racehorse beating Dr. Fager twice and also being an excellent Sire.

@cf1970 - I love these videos you post. Thank you for doing so :)

Went by 'em like they was tied to a post!! LOL!! Pretty remarkable horse Damascus. There have been many greats in my time! Would love to see more of these type greats before I'm gone but this isn't too likely. Thanks for the memories!!!!

I cant understand what was going on in the cameramans head. Why would he wont to show the second place horse running through the stretch instead of the monster who wins it? Just plain stupid!

I understand the awe, but if you watch from the start it's obvious that the two frontrunners were flying early. The rider on the rail horse was asking his horse for everything the first six furlongs, the end result is a better than looked performance from Damascus. I'm not taking ANYTHING away from the greatness of Damascus, I just think his races versus Dr. Fager are a better example of his true greatness.

Damascus was a freak, definitely one of the greatest horses ever. You just have to watch him as he went flying to take the lead and pull away as to realize this horse wasn't normal. I think The Good Doctor was better than Damascus, but boy! This guy could run!

I have never seen a horse accelerate past a field like that. I replay the video from 1:20 and still can't believe it.

Wow is right! It is amazing how he made them look like they were standing still. His speed was breathtaking when he got rolling. One of the very best ever without a doubt. You're very welcome.

Damascus didnt need his rabbit Hedavar to clobber this field. I always preferred Fager, but hey this was quite a racehorse.

I've been going to the track for over 40 years and I've never seen a move like that. As soon as Cappy said "gap of 8 lengths to Damascus" it seemed like he passed them and took a ten length lead.

I always like Damascus as a sire. He was directly responsible for horses like Swiss Yodeler, Ogygian, Fly So Free, Eastern Echo, Desert Wine, D'Hallevant, Captain Steve, etc.....

Who cares what the quacks who write the stuff in the history books. It is people like us who live and breath horses, who's opinions count! I think that Damascus was one of the very to ever set foot on the track!!!

Holy crap! Were those painted on the fence??? Looked like NASCAR, where a dude gets "in the draft" and suddenly blows the doors off the dude in front... Wonder if the rider had to turn Damascus suddenly to avoid running OVER those guys???

Agreed. Damascus was one of the greats, without a doubt. Excellent sire too. Thanks for the comments.
