I know hindsight is a great thing but how good would have been if Rogan Josh and Jezabeel had a Caulfield Cup next to thier name. Ah well like I said they made up for it in the Melbourne Cup. Castletown was a great 2-miler as well and was only beaten by Subzero - on the wet track. Subbie was a wet-tracker - would not have won if the track was firmer.

Oh for sure, I have no doubt, she was absolutely bolting home. I think if Taufan's Melody had been any old Australasian horse, he would've lost the race in the stipe's room. Not that Jezabeel would get promoted to 1st obviously, but I believe it was being an international that kept him the race. I still prefer Castletown to her though by a country mile. And yes, RJ suffered from a fairly ordinary ride in the Caulfield, no questions there!

The 1999 Caulfield Cup is on here too. Watch how Rogan Josh is taken to the lead far too early - Chris Munce rode him that day. He plugged on well to get 4th but just like Jezabeel - what might have been. But they made up for it in the Melbourne Cup. :)

Jezabeel would of won that Caulfield Cup had she not been polaxed - it's a wonder how she managed to stay on her feet. Both Rogan Josh and Jezabeel should of had a Caulfield Cup next to thier name. I already knew about Jezabeel winning the Auckland Cup. She is the only horse to do the Auckland Cup / Melbourne Cup double :) as for Castletown - he got beaten by Subzero in the 1992 Melbourne Cup - track was a mud pit and Subzero thrived in those conditions.

I think Jezabeel has more right to be considered unlucky in the Caulfield Cup than Rogan Josh, lol, and people tend to forget that she won the Auckland Cup as well. The horses you mention all fit into that same category though. The best stayer I've seen from over here (NZ) never managed to win the Melbourne Cup, his best result was third, he was an iron horse though, a true 2-miler, and his stats at that trip are exceptional. That would be Castletown.

I reckon at times RJ is under-rated. But I always maintain that whilst he wasn't a champion stayer. he was a handy stayer and WA's best 2-miler in a long long time. If you compare RJ with similiar dour type stayers such as Just A Dash, What A Nuisance, Kensei, Tawrriffic, Subzero, Jezabeel and Brew - I reckon he is better then all of them. I think his stats prove it too. None of these horses won at Group 1 WFA level. RJ even ran in the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase and got 4th or 5th.

RJ may not have been the best horse in the field but his odds were 5/1 on Cup day and he would of been mighty hard to beat considering the form he was in. Not only did he win the Mackinnon but he also got 4th in the Caulfield Cup (should of won if he was ridden a bit better) and the week before the Caulfield Cup - he won the Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes. So form wise he was going to be hard to beat. It was the 50kg in the Melbourne Cup that did it for him and Bart got him right too.

I remember that win very well, I didn't think he was the best horse in the Melbourne Cup field by a long shot, but that run in the MacKinnon proved he was the best-trained. And with Bart's horses, that's often what has gotten him the win. Not the best horse, but trained to the minute.

That's right - spot on. Take a look at Rogan Josh's Mackinnon Stakes win. Its on here. Watch how he comes from the tail of the field - this race was a fast run Mackinnon and he ran over the top of them. Its always good to see when stayers win these 2000m wfa races.
