I was at laurel Park the day Broad Brush debuted in 1985. He dumped his jock, Vince Bracciale and ran off. He ran sixth. But then he reeled off a string of victories and was named Md. Bred Juvenile. Dickie Small let me visit him in the paddock as a 3-year old. He was one neat but quirky horse. i still follow all of his progeny. It seems, like Secretariat and Medaglia D'Oro, that his daughters are where his strength lies.

Cordero seems pretty sure he won at the wire by half a nose....

I almost forgot about Broad Brush but he was that bruiser type of beat you down horse. If I recall he was a Maryland based horse. 1 of the few that always got saddled down with a lot of weight later on. Very difficult for a horse to jump to the other coast in a race like this and win.

Cordero gets payback for Seattle Slew when Exceller/Shoemaker beat him a nose in the 1978 Jockey Club Gold cup.

Most would fault with Shoe for what looked like a premature move down the backstretch, but the leaders were intentionally slowing it down to try and save for the stretch run, so he had to move to establish position. He was well in-hand around the far turn into the head of the stretch. You could see the Derby winner fighting back, and this could be one of the unluckiest head bob of all times (besides Colonel John and Mambo in Seattle.) Ferd probably fought til the very end as in this race...

Two excellent horses in an excellent race, with two of the best jockeys of all time Cordero and Shoemaker nose and nose in the stretch. Quite the dramatic finish. What a horse race! Very sad what happened to Ferdinand. A champion, indeed.

WOW! They don't campaign 'em like that anymore. If Pletcher trained either one of them, they'd be sitting this one out with a high blood count. It's great to relive the great old days when racehorses were raced against racehorses! Thanks for the video!

Wow. What a finish...too bad that Ferd didn't win. He looked sharp. What an end to a beautiful and kind horse.
    thanks for the video

WOW! Never seen this race, glad I did! I've never seen a closer non-dead heat finish!

A fantastic finish, to be sure. Agreed, a truly sad fate for both of them.

I enjoyed this race even though Ferdinand had such a horrible end to his life as well as Shoemaker.
