fabulous race. I remember this race very clearly as I was there at Haydock that Saturday. the quality of the field use to be gold cup and top handicapper standard (150 plus), wheras today its good handicappers (130-150). the changes to the course didnt help. bad bad move.
just that sight of the five fences in a row in the straight is a wonderful sight. I didn't much like them getting rid of the permanent, proper fences, but moving it to the inside has removed a lot of the genuine quality to the races. Stamina just doesn't seem to be so important now. And as for that enormous run-in.... oh well. Great vid, thanks.
Combs Ditch was always a big favourite of mine. Very classy horse and unlucky to come up against Wayward Lad and Burrough Hill Lad went placed in 2 King George's. Thanks for posting this!
What a great race with some all time favourite chasers involved. Coombs Ditch was a great chaser and i think Colin Brown prefered to ride him rather than Desert Orchid when Dessie won his first King George
