I was working in a bookies at this time and someone had a one penny each way lucky 15 a few weeks later including Diminuendo in the Irish Oaks. She dead heated at 2/9 with Melodist so the odds became 1/18!

Supposing one loses on the day, place betting only, but if one has used, say, 50 pounds for the day, and been place betting from race to race all day, one might have got 18 place collects out of 24, and finished with, say, 40 puonds. Not a brilliant outcome, but one has turned over, say, 160 pounds in collects, including stake and winning margins, involving, say, 170 pounds in outlays then one has done the given betting agency no favors. They've won 10 pounds off you, but paid 17 pounds in tax.

Yep. Bookmakers and betting agencies particularly dislike place betting of all the racing betting options. I've heard it theorised more than once that place betting is the only way one can win on race betting - on a consistent basis involving the rolling over of ' capital '. That inclodes speculative place betting on odds on, never mind 7/4. One will lose bets doing this, but the art is small profit returns in sufficient volume to cover the occasional 4th or NTD.

I backed Diminuendo to win that - but it was 10 pounds each-way - at either William Hill or Ladbrokes in Exeter. I was staying at Exeter YHA. There was no Mecca bookmaker on Eceter at the time, which was a hassle, because I'd have preferred to bet place only, even though that one won. To bet I had to go each-way to do any place betting. Its still the case with scummy Ladbrokes and William Hill - no outright place betting on horse or greyhound races. Tote Sport, since then, permits place only.

I love the way she travelled down the hill. You get a great view thanks to the camerawork. A brilliant filly.
