Sayfar's Lad was the second Pipe winner which Peter Scudamore declined to ride at this meeting, following Sondrio in the opening day's Supreme Novices Hurdle For that race, Scu chose Elementary, from Jim Bolger's Irish yard, who was brought down. In the Sun Alliance, he picked Pipe's more fancied runner, Pertemps Network, who finished 17th.
This was also the year when the Irish drew a blank at Cheltenham - first time they had done so since (I think) 1947. Trapper John was one of only a couple of placed horses they had over the full three days.
He looked a very good horse on the day but unfortunately never won again. Well beaten at Liverpool next time out, then missed a couple of years with injury and ran several more times without success. Could have gone right to the top if he'd stayed fit.
great race, Morley Street went on to win Champion Hurdle but dont forget that Trapper John won the Stayers Hurdle the following season with Naevog in 2nd.as usual Bluemanc great upload.
