Mike Welsh said he didn't look as sharpon Sunday as he did on Saturday and on Monday he didn't look as sharp as he did on Sunday. Steve Haskin adcknowledged that. Why don't you check out the bounce he had in his step before his jogs at Pimlico and Churchill and then see if you think he is the best conditioned horse going into the Belmont or is as sharp. I'm not a UnionRags guy but how do you know how fit he is? Every time a horse goes for the crown its the same: he looks like Pegasus.

Twelve days after the Preakness Affirmed worked a mile in 1:40 1/5. Three days before the epic '78 Belmont he worked five furlongs in 1:01 flat. I have been unable to find the records for his gallops during those three weeks. Laz considered this to be a soft, coddling schedule for the colt since he initially came out of the Preakness "light" and not quite at his peak, according to Barrera. If the colt had come out of the Preakness more robust, he'd have worked more and faster. Contrast.

Even if it is true that he gallops at a two minute clip, that is still nowhere near breezing speeds, that is the speed of a very slow Standardbred...and he's only doing this "hard" gallop for a mile, Affirmed did more galloping and more breezing and he needed every last bit of tightening that Laz drilled into him because another truly great horse happened to be born the very same year and as it turns out, he only had a nose to spare!

Not quite true. The term "work" should be used loosely here. He gallops so fast that even if they aren't official works, they might as well be. You don't copy what other Triple Crown horses did before because every horse is different, and Billy Turner said it would be a mistake to copy what he did with Seattle Slew for just that reason. If there's a fitter horse on the track in the Belmont than I'll Have Another, I'll be very surprised. A lot of other things can cause a loss, but that isn't one.

No Triple Crown winner has received less work in between the Preakness and the Belmont than this horse has...look up what Laz Barrera did with Affirmed during the corresponding three weeks....
