also ran was Cicada, filly voted champ as a 2yo, again as a 3yo and again the next year as best older filly/mare. This virtual match race used to be a highlight during Travers week; hope it still is, because it is! :) Thanks for posting

Cut my racing teeth on Fred Capossela's calls and it's great to hear him again here, in what is arguably the greatest ever duel-to-the-finish in horse racing! Thanks so much for posting!!

Military Plume's momentum was slowed somewhat, but it's tough to say whether he would have caught up or not. You make a good point though; the speed duel between the front two likely could have brought them back to him had he not been forced out into the track.
    Thanks for the comments.

It was Military Plume, a son of the great Princequillo.

The horse that finishes 3rd was probably the best horse in the race and wins if not for losing some serious momentum the last eighth mile when those horses came out on him.

Well said. This race is one of the best battles in racing history, without question.
    Thank you for the comments.

The most freakish horse race of all time. You will never see a race like this again. The closest was the 1978 Belmont. Thank you for posting it.

Pretty good field with Jaipur & Ridan duking it out for a mile and a quarter! Smart & Cicada were pretty good horses too. Manny Ycaza was on Ridan while the Shoe was on Jaipur. The fractions were 23 & 1/5, 47 & 2/5, 1:11, 1:35 & 2/5 and 2:01 & 3/5 at the finish equaling the track record. One of the alltime classic races. Thanks for posting!!!

Hehe, no problem. I'm used to listening to exciting calls here in Puerto Rico (Norman H. Davila) and in the US I believe Trevor Denman is on a class all by himself.

Yes, it's painfully obvious that an exciting race call is what most people hope for, but again, some callers are/were on the dry side (Cassidy was becomiing very dry by 1989, we agree there). They steadfastly chose professionalism and accuracy over style and flair, that was my point. In their defense, when they were at their best, they indeed did have style; some liked them, some didn't. You obviously didn't (re: Caposella). Fair enough. Take care.

A race is supposed to be exciting, and the call is part of what makes it exciting. It's like watching an action movie at the theaters in monostereo sound. Not the same thing, no matter how great the visuals are. Worst call I have heard is from when Easy Goer almost broke the world record for one mile, it was an awesome race but the call put you to sleep!

That was Cappy's style, very matter-of-fact, professional and not guessing at a winner, instead leaving that to the placing judges, as was common for that era. Many callers now could learn a thing or two from him in those respects. I think he did a very good job calling this race, and what a classic race it was!

Well, the call of the race wasn't very exciting, to tell you the truth. Too many long pauses within it, it wasn't fluid and he didn't inject any emotion into the fact that these two had been battling since the start. Still, the race itself was great.

Thanks, Jazzy. This is a truly historic race, neither horse gave an inch!
    Have a great week!
