I am an out and out thoroughbred fan, but I'll tell you one thing: if you ask a Tb fan to name ONE harness racing horse, then 9 times out of ten they will name Niatross.
When Niatross lost ground by galloping and still ran 4th to qualify it's considered a great feat. You should watch Mount Eden's win in the 1971 Miracle Mile. Now there was a horse. And he ended up with Albatross but sadly, due to injury, never got to run in the U.S. Look the race up on here. One of Australia's absolute best.
Of course and I'm totally agree with you, Varenne probably was the best in all history of harness racing, but he was a trotter, Niatross was a pacer, a different thing impossible to mix it. Anyhow I think I should clarify it in the sentence. Regards!

The best of all time is "VARENNE" the gift of God , impossible to match. Niatross is certainly a great horse, respect for him.
