Remember there were people in Australia who threatened to shoot Pharlap too. A couple of weeks back I was looking at stall20 at St Albans Stud in Geelong where Pharlap was hidden before the Melbourne Cup.

@RareHonesty Good point about Phar Lap....I think Tommy gave his usual dose, but that in combination of the extra arsenic around the barn, in the hay, etc proved to be fatal. It was just too much for PL to handle. I always wondered, how did Tommy react to seeing his beloved horse mounted? Somewhere I read, he fainted. Poor guy!

Awh :) He's such a cute horse. May this beautiful champion rest in peace! I hope some day you guys would all stop fighting :/

@Kulaness Come on guys. This is not way to honour a great horse. Aussies and Americans are the best of mates, whether it be in the battlefield or the sporting field. Put away the knuckle dusters and the chains, shake hands and celebrate the deeds of this great champion.

I'm not sure if I'm pleased Phar Lap wasn't murdered, or sad that he died so tragically needlessly, but it has been proven he died of an accidental arsenic overdose. Arsenic was widely used in so-called tonics in those days, and they were able to test strands of hair from his mane for it. The reason they didn't do this sooner was because earlier methods of testing wouldn't have been able to distinguish the arsenic he had consumed from that used to help preserve his body.

Actually there is evidence that the Americans killed Phar Lap.It is said that A Yankee crime gang killed him because he was a threat to them because if he won any more races they would inflict huge losses on their illegal bookmakers, death by arsenic overdose. Look it up it says so.

Give it a rest, people. Read the Australian book "Phar Lap" by Armstrong & Thompson and you'll see he most likely died of a bacterial disease they didn't know about then (big surprise - medical science was just coming out of infancy then).

No. His lines came form NZ/Aussie blood. He was part owned by an American. That doesnt make him AN AMERICAN HORSE. Duh. If i part-owned Barbaro for example, would he suddenly become a NZ horse? No. And I think its obvious he was killed by one.

epic. Who said he was killed by an American? He was an American horse.

Haha, your actually retarded in a way. He was killed by an american, so thats why. he was also put into part-owned by Tommy Woodcock before they left for America. If Tommy wanted to, he could of sold Phar Lap, but obviously Tommy wouldn't have ever done that.

Yes, we all got together and went, "Let's kill a horse." Seriously, blaming all of us is stupid. And if you would sit down and think, all sports have corruption within them, regardless of the country. Get off your high horses.

  • swanningaround Says:

How can you blame Americans? The horse was owned by an American.

I agree, they prob should just quit racing horses altogether

  • carlykaiser Says:

    26/01/2009 8:18:32 AM

So the whole entire American racing industry killed him?

  • whiteplague07 Says:

    18/10/2008 7:50:19 AM

Its so hard to choose between which race horse is better, either Phar Lap or Man O' War. It is a shame that American's posioned him with arcenic.

Entreaty(Phar Laps dam)had only raced one time in the UK before breaking down then she was purchased and exported to NZ and served by Night Raid(Phar Laps sire)

Night Raid(Phar Laps sire),whose dam Sentiment was a granddaughter of Carbine, had been a dud as a race horse in England and was sold to Australia and then to NZ breeder Mr A.F.Roberts whose stud was at Timaru There Night Raid served Entreaty(Phar Laps dam)and as a result of the mating PHAR LAP.
