Prince Bishop set a new track record for 1900 meters on tapeta in this race
crossing the wire in a final time of 1:55:67. The result was a surprise,
but not that big of a surprise, IMO. Prince Bishop has always been a rock
solid performer racing on synthetic surfaces, and he stays well beyond 1900
meters having beaten Royal Empire and Main Sequence just 5 months ago on
Kempton's polytrack surface to win the G3 September Stakes over 2400
meters. African Story got rolling a tad too late but was closing like a
shot. He ended up finishing only 1-1/4 lengths behind Prince Bishop. Pretty
eye catching 2nd from African Story considering it was his first start
since finishing 5th last March in the Dubai World Cup. Zambucca ran on
surprisingly well also to finish 3rd, beating out last year's winner
Hunter's Light who ran 4th. Definitely Zambucca's best performance so far
at the carnival. Disappointments of the race have to be Godolphin's
Artigiano finishing 15th of 16 and former highly regarded Coolmore prospect
Battle of Marengo finishing dead last. 2nd time in the past 3 renewals of
this race that Mickael Barzalona & Silvestre De Sousa passed the mount of
the eventual winner of the race off to Kieren Fallon in favor of riding
other horses in the field. Fallon won this race in 2012 aboard Mendip after
Barzalona & De Sousa both passed on riding him in favor of other horses in
the field for that renewal, too.
