R7 TRENTHAM16 March 2019
Lightning Hcp LR OPEN ($48,000), 1200m 1:10.88
Race Synopsis: This Listed Open over 1200m saw a tight finish with the first four over the line separated by just over half a length and the winner being a deserved 6yo mare in Volks Lightning. She had been running much better than it could ever read this year in four runs prior for one placing to show as they came at G1 twice and G3 twice. The track today at Trentham looked awful and was chipping badly from the outset plus the grass was obviously left too long and added to the overall poor presentation and performance. The times all day (bar the chute times as they are always bionic and not a realistic guide whatsoever) were slack (a Benchmark72 almost ran 1:40 for a mile) and a G3 winner with upside galore ran almost 1:38 for a mile The winners and where they turned for home in race order were led (three-off the fence and a neck ahead), led (one-off the fence and a length ahead), led (one-off the fence and four lengths ahead), fourth (five-off the fence and a length and a half from the leader), eighth (deepest (nine-off the fence) and two lengths from the leader), seventh (second widest (nine-off the fence) and two lengths from the leader), fourth (seven off the fence and two and a half lengths from the leader), fourth (five-off the fence and half a length from the leader) and second (six-off the fence and half a length from the leader). Volks Lightning raced fourth wide (with cover) and moved into third at the 200m before in a ding donger of a finish led at the 15m and held on to score by a head in 1:10.88. It was her sixth win in thirty-four starts and her second Blacktype win with her first coming at G3 last October so this season has ended up bolstering her broodmare worth more than any other. Princess Kereru got off the inside early and raced fifth before coming up sixth wide across the junction and moved into fourth at the 200m then sustained her run to get second the final 5m. Ferrando, a stablemate of the winner, sat outside the leader keeping it honest and was still in a fight for victory all the way down the run home until the final 15m. Passing Shot led and was kept company until being narrowly headed at the 15m and he was fourth just 5m later. Vinnie's Volley, the second outsider of the field, raced handy on the inner and fought on well to be beaten just under a length and a half. Sasso Corbaro missed away and was last at the 800m and across the junction before running on quite okay the closing stages and the start cost her the race in all likelihood. The rest got beaten almost four lengths up to five lengths with the main flop being Signify, a G1 winner on the track running last. The first three home have seen each other numerous times already this year and either twice or once before at G1 level and once at G3. The eyecatching run out of the race for all to see was the Australian bred Sasso Corbaro and she has found New Zealand opposition much easier since coming to a new yard and may well be a G1 player next season as the sprinting ranks are not very deep at all.
