When Shoemaker was on, nobody could touch him. Unfortunately, he liked to drink a little too much and later in his career, those "on" days were fewer and fewer. But what a magnificent sense of pace he had!

Round Table's story is one of the most intriguing and it goes back through the lead-up to WWII. His is what is called a "classic" pedigree. His daddy was one of the best stayers ever, Princequillo. His grandaddy, Prince Rose won 16 out of 17 races in Belgium and was a national treasure, but because of the war, he was shuttled around to find a safe haven for him. This story reads like a novel....great profiles are at Spiletta and also at reines-de-course.

Thank you so much for posting so much footage of the best grass horse that ever lived. Dear old Round Table -- he's so funny, running up, bowing and shaking his head at the groom. The Hancocks had him in the pasture right behind their house after he was pensioned they loved him so much. Did you know that he and Bold Ruler were born on the same farm on the same day? What magnificent configuration of stars and planets and galaxies presided over their birth?

Aw!! This is my horses granddad. My boy wasn't much of a racer (only got 3rd twice), but he's a great hunter jumper now :)

I love Round Table, he was a wonderful story from start to finish. Those old meanies would pile on more weight and he would go out and break another record.haha:) He was extraordinary, no doubt about it. This clip is great CF but are there no races of his on here? I can't find any. Thanks for all you do for us fans:)

This is a reply to phddddd, who sent in an admirable posting. I too, was a youngster growing up in S. California, and warmingly my father taking me to Hollywood Park, on Saturday afternoons. I loved this great champion, Round Table. For his great grit, determination to win, and overcome the worst of adversity, especially the weights he was constantly burdened with, there has never been a champion, to compare with this thoroughbred. He should have placed much higher than 17th on alltime list

Round Table, my first love! My dad used to take me out of school to head for the races in Southern California. It didn't take long for me to figure who was King of the Hill. Yet, Shoemaker would always favor Gallant Man over Round Table, and I don't think I ever saw Round Table beat Gallant Man. Man, those were the days of some great racing heros.

Round Table is another great that impresses me very, very much. Hickory is the perfect way to describe him, on the track, and for living to the ripe old age of thirty three.
I have Gallant Man's 1957 Travers; I've just made it public.

cf1970,do you by chance have anything on his rivals Bold Ruler and Gallant Man? That would be wonderful if you do,I feel people should see on video all of these top class horses.

Round Table was a hickory racehorse. He was very versatile, winning on dirt and turf. He was also a very good sire. His name in pedigrees speaks of substance.

Round Table won 43 of 66 starts. You will never see a horse come close to that many starts with all the money to be made in the breeding industry.

Glad you enjoyed the video, my friend! I really want to read Georgeff's bio quite badly, thanks for the info! Have a great weekend!

That's awesome! I have Phil Georgeff's 2002 autobiography entitled appropriately, "And They're Off!" and I have read and enjoyed it a million times over; His boundless, genuine enthusiasm is evident from cover to cover! Tom Durkin wrote the foreword and talks about "really wanted to be Phil Georgeff" when he grew up right down to the short sleeve white shirt and double windsor tie knot.

Another outstanding job there, cf1970! Thanks again! That was legendary Chicago announcer Phil Georgeff on the call of the Arlington Hcp. of 1959, his first of 34 seasons behind the mike. Interestingly, 2008 KY Derby contender Big Brown has Round Table/Princesquillo on both sides of his bloodlines-so distance should be no problem.

I think it should be against the law to assign a race horse more than 130 pounds. At some point, simple superiority should be allowed to have its way, unencumbered by man-made handicaps.

I agree with you on both counts. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to unearth any Princequillo footage so far. You can bet I'll keep digging though. Take care.
