I remember staying up all night listening to the radio following reports of her progress at the Vet's.... until they had to decide enough was enough.

It makes me laugh when I watch the old clip of people giving their opinions on who was gonna win, and how one of the women said "Ruffian because shes a female". That to me is just as silly as some of the men saying "Foolish pleasure because he's a male". because that's not how horses are. Both sexes are built for speed to outrun danger even for pregnant females because they're out in the open. Whereas with humans, the women where sheltered while the men hunted so that's how we are, not animals.

You know I'm not a feminist, and I don't just think that Ruffian would have won the match race just because "she's a female". She would have won because she WAS the better horse. She ran against other fillies but she broke track records set by colts and even stallion and she did it each time mostly without the whip. Don't get me wrong, Foolish Pleasure was a great opponent too and I think he had a real chance to beat her but I think she could definitely have done it.

I was there when I was a child. LeRoy Jolley was a friend of my late Father's. I cried for days when she died. She was an awesome horse and Native Dancer has been largely bred out. Do you have Exceller in the Breeder's Cup? Thanks for this.
