I still think Landaluce should have been 1982 Horse of the Year

I am a proud owner of a gelding sired by Groom and he looks exactly like him. Thanks for this wonderful video! It gave me goosebumps.

I have a gelding out of Runaway Groom, and he has the hugest heart out of any horse I've owned. Definitely a fan of the Runaway Groom lines.

I loved both CC and Alomas Ruler. CC was pure speed and Aloma was the little Maryland based horse that could. I remember hearing the surprise winner of this race at the time but never saw it before. Thanks CF.

Runaway Groom is no longer with us; he was euthanized June 8, 2007.
    RIP, big fella.

My brother in-law had taped this race and subsequently taped over it, leaving a 1/2 hour of the race left. I happened to have the tape and had fallen asleep watching it, and when I awoke, the race was just starting. I was like, " Oh, what the heck, I'll watch this race then go to bed." I was treated to the best race I ever saw! I remember thinking that Runaway Groom wasn't even in the frame of the TV until the final turn. What a beautiful Horse, and exciting race. Thanks 4 sharing it

yes-some facts about R.G. He Was the "only "Horse, in the Trainers hands at the time .AND AFTER THIS RACE THE OWNER TOOK HIM AWAY FROM THE tRAINER AND HE NEVER DID BECOME WHAT HE SHOULD HAVE...This was a very competitive field and he did excel in the breeding shed. the film after the race shows the Trainer being ,[who did a marvelous ,underappreciated job]being jostled and ignored by the interviewers ,Because of all the embarressment this Horse caused . RIGHT -ON RUNAWAY,,,,,

Pace makes the race. They went fast early and paid for it in the end. All Jeffrey Fell had to do was to sit behind and wait for them to come back. Aloma's Ruler ran the gutsiest race of them all.

lol, duh I know Runaway GROOM is gray. There was another comment here about my horse, Runaway POKEY who is a RG son, my horse is the bay.

I agree. One my my favorite race calls ever. And yes, Runaway Groom did very well in the breeding shed as well.
Thanks for the comments, I appreciate them.

Love how he said "and RUNAWAY GROOM...FROM CANADA, moves up!" It was as if he had actually closed from Canada.

Not only that, Runaway Groom is by FAR the best sire of this bunch, and has many excellent children, such as Cherokee Run. He was just a late bloomer who was a lot more worthy of victory here than any of the other four.

Had anyone known how strong the Blushing Groom line was at the time, this horse NEVER would have paid 17-1.

Blushing Groom is THE dominant sire in rcing. Take a look at what he's left in his progeny.

Alomas Ruler was one of my alltime favorites. This horse had solid-steel balls. My ex-brother in law knew the guy who trained him(forget his name now). I saw him run second to a damn good horse in his own right, Wavering Monarch, in the '82 Haskell. Look at how he dogged CC the whole way; and when Runaway Groom ran by the two of them in the deep streth, watch how he turned his head, dug in and went after him. Great race.

The intro sounds as if it is Harvey Pack, the longtime host of the NYRA replay show before John Imbriale and now Jason Blewitt. The actual call is by Marshall Cassidy, who called this race for both NYRA and CBS.

He is not a gray he is a bay which I believe his dam Scotchbonnetpepper is. He did not do incredibly well on the track and that is how he has found his way into my life but he has the best disposition and work ethic. Haha I think it was his name that cursed him. His registered name is Runaway Pokey

I agree. The Groom was full of heart. Congratulations on becoming an owner of one of Runaway Groom's fine progeny. Thanks for watching.
