I love this clip!! There are so many places that you can really, really see how he stretches out and 'grabs the earth' as Jimmy Gaffney put it. Some places you can see the other horses running 1 1/2 strides to his 1. One heckuva stride!! Magnificent horse! ♥

the power and stamina shown in this race by sec is unreal ,any other horse would have been burnt out at the last furlong.Sec demonstrates in this race, more than any other imop why he is the best.Sec not only fights off all the challenges,he wins the race going away.............at the end.

Secretariat and Man O War deserve respect from everyone! They both put their whole hearts into pleasing humans!

Yes, he was "moving like an incredible tease!" ... and still found time to set the then world record of 2:37.8 over 1 5/8 miles pulling up after the post. Just imagine if he'd been serious the whole way as per the Belmont!

At the beginning of the backstretch you can see this best; but check out how much larger Sec is than Tentam and the others. Sec was like a locomotive just powering along and when it was time to put the race away, he hits gear 5 and glides away from Tentam who could only eat Sec's grass clippings.

The horse that some people are calling "Tim Tam" is actually "Tentam", who was a GRANDSON of "Tim Tam". Tentam was probably the best turf horse of that era. Notice how Secretariat kept his legs closer to the ground. This was his FIRST race on grass, and when he trained for this race, on his own he changed his gallop/stride to what is called a "daisy cutter" gallop. Secretariat was the best racehorse ever, and arguably the most intelligent racehorse ever. He is still missed by millions.

Love this! Ron just brushes his shoulder and Secretariat picks up the pace. Fabulous!! A horse shouldn't be a race horse if you have to beat the hell out of 'em to get 'em to run. mho

pause at 0:53 and look how secretariat is bigger and has a fuller mane and tail. HE WAS GORGEOUS! :)

This was, both, a stakes and course record. Secretariat beat the existing stakes record by 2 1/5th seconds with Ten Tam also beating the existing stakes record. The hold on Sec was much tighter than at the Belmont Stakes. He ran the second half of this race faster than the second half of the Belmont AND, as always, he looks like is just having fun.

Agree with you! This just looks like one of his early morning work outs! what would of happend if the jockey really asked him to stretch out off that bend? 30 lenths win? Was hardly off the bridle in any part of that race.

seems he was just playing with the other horse, almost teasing him. you could see the stride of Secretatiat was so much longer, he was just galloping along at the end, a walk in the park

Pause at 0:54 and compare secretariats size to the rest. HES HUGE! even his tails fluffier! :D

IMHO, Secretariat was just too much horse for anyone in history. The valiant horse in this race is in fact Tentam, son of the speedy Intentionally...Hall of Famer Tim Tam ran in 1957 and '58. Others have mixed up the names in the past, so it's no big deal. :) Thank you for the comments.

So many great horses from 1972/73. Tim Tam, Kennedy Road, Onion, Angle Light, Twice a Prince, the great Sham, and so many more. It's a testimony to how great Secretariat was and how difficult it was to win the Triple Crown. You can tell how much heart Tim Tam has in this race, he's just over matched.

One of the best clips to watch him run. True athletes love what they do and he certainly did love to run and had the equipment to do it. One of a kind! ♥

tim tam ran a huge race...secretariat was just a monster....you wonder if he could have gone 2:22 if he really had to sprint at the end of this race or the Belmont
