I Swear by the end of Secretariats career the HORSE had noticed how dominant it was and decided to start playing on the track. That's what breaking last is about I think.

Laffit Pincay, Sham's jockey, knew that his horse did not have the goods to compete with Secretariat. He took the whip to Sham, big time, in the Preakness while Turcotte hand rode Big Red. There was just nothing Sham could do. In the Wood, Secretariat's excercise rider knew there was something wrong with Sec & Turcotte was having the same problem with the reigns due to Sec's huge abcess in his mouth. Had he let Sec run on his own, the Wood WOULD have been different. Sham was a GREAT horse!

What could Sham have done, if he were not injured...? I don't want to think about it. Sham goes unmentioned all the time, while Secretariat lives immortal. Imagine how different if could have been.

great video. That horse was amazing. Good job. And if you want to know something interesting Shams heart weighed about 18 pounds and sham also ran the second fastest Kentucky derby time while finishing second to secretariat

Wasn't that a great call? Big Red WAS a machine. No one could beat him when he was at his best. I have no doubt of that. Take care.

That's a very good point, Fawsag. Some horses have an ego that is quite fragile. I'd love to see another Secretariat myself, but I doubt it will happen in my lifetime. I'll continue to dream though! Take care.

When we see another Secretariat, you will see small fields again. Owners do not want to demoralize their horses, and often hold them out of races when losing is a certainty.

You're most welcome, silvermoon2003. SECRETARIAT was the GREATEST racehorse. EVER! IMHO. Take care.

The great ones like Secretariat are few and far between. Thanks for posting this!

Yeah, I agree, bon. Secretariat would have run 1:59 flat or probably even faster if he didn't lose ground on those turns. Sham was a wonderful horse too. Take care.

If you notice, S is wide 2nd time as he comes @ turn for lead in Derby. Bill Nack says if he hadn't gone wide those 2 times, would have had a time of 1:59 flat! Oh m'God, wish I'd seen him in flesh. Just remember yelling to Dad to come look on TV as he was @ 14 lengths in Belmont.
