He had a disease called laminities (sp) where the hooves come apart and it's very very painful, some where in the videos of Secretariat there is a person who explains what the disease does to a horse. It became so painful for Big Red that the only humane thing they could do was put him away peacefully. Big Red has a special place in my heart.

seriously its like we dont see athletes like this anymore...not just in Horse racing, but every sport. all the greats and legends of any sport were all in the past. now we're just stuck with athletes who only do it for the money and fame...no ones heart is in it anymore.

3:10 It was not Paul Feliciano's fault that Secretariat was beaten in his first start. He did not do a terrible job. If they had shown the start of the race one could see how hard Secretariat was knocked by Quebec.

I never quite understood why Mrs. Chenery-Tweedy (at the time) ran her horse with a FEVER. I know there is pressure, but IMO, the horse's health comes first. I don't care if that horse IS Secretariat. He should not have run. Period.

TY, for that:)--I'm remembering Seabiscuit's harsh treatment as he was growing up & how it affected him & his attitude towards his handlers & racing itself & how the fact that he blessedly ended up in the hands of the Howards who truly loved him made ALL the difference--it makes me wonder if Big Red had been allowed to run as a 4 yr old if the lack of that kind of love would have affected his ability to keep on winning--since true greatness comes from the heart God Bless & Merry Christmas:)

I couldn't agree more. Watching how careful Frankel, a great horse in his own right was cared for I keep wishing some one besides his handler, Eddie Sweat, god bless him, cared about him. The owner and trainer sure didn't. Thank you so much for your insightful comment. I couldn't have said it better. God bless you

Oh, I'm not fooling myself as to how it was somehow 'missed' believe me--I thought just as you did about it--and, yes, if only Turcotte had known--he was a great jockey and, he would have known what to do--but, for the love of money, they ruined that great horse's chances of maybe retiring undefeated--as I believe he would have, had money not upstaged caring for his physical welfare--thank God Seabicuit's last owners really loved him--it makes me cry for Secretariat & others like him:(

Don't fool yourself...that abscess WASN'T MISSED by a LONGSHOT! Do you honestly think Tweedy/Lauren were going to scratch Secretariat with approx. hafl of the $6M investors coming to Aqueduct..."BS"? What I don't understand was why Lauren DIDN'T tell Turcotte. If Ronnie had known, he wouldn't have pulled on the bit (which was resting against the abscess!) to ask SEC for speed, and would have simply let SEC run wild right out of the gate. Absolutely careless & inexcusable act by Lauren!

Not quite true. His next race was the Arlington Invitational (now called the Secretariat Stakes) which he won comfortably in Chicago. After that he entered the Whitney with a fever and still ran second to Onion when he should have been scratched. A few weeks later he was recovered and beat Onion by 12 lengths while setting two more world records in the Marlboro Cup.
