@80cathryn if thats so then Phar Laps 4 group 1 wins in a week with the melbourne cup carrying 136lbs and his mexico win with a cracked hoof is just as good , Secretariats belmont wasn't that flash , he had 4 horses against him , Sham broke down and nevber raced again he finished against nothing ,and 11/14 races at belmont at that time got their records broke , he tried the same performance against Prove out at woodward and got owned by 5 lengths true no?

Secretariat was the best American thoroughbred that I ever saw in my lifetime that I can I'm old enough to have actually seen race, and I would say that Brigadier Gerard very close to the same era, during the very early 1970's in the UK is the best European thoroughbred that I can say I'm old enough to have actually seen and remember. It's really all about personal preference. Because there's 15 or more other horses from around the world you can make strong cases for to be on this list, IMO.

Perhaps then a greatest grouping of horses is appropriate. Base inclusion on the following: 1 of a kind performances; accomplishments not achieved by any other horse before or since; impact on the sport; length of time holding track, nat'l or world records.IE Sec won triple crown in race record times and all three are still records 39 yrs later.& one of those races is still a world record. He's the only TC winner to do this and his Belmont is the measure by which all horses are compared. Fair?

Better hope that MrItaliano1900 doesn't get wind of this - he'll abort a baby for not having Ribot as the all time greatest; then, there's a slew of Phar Lap people, me among them but I have a bit more class than they, as I would merely suggest inclusion in the top 5 or 6 and leave it at that. My top 5 + a mare are in no order: Sec; MOW; PharLap; SeaBirdII; Ribot and Ruffian.

I disagree. The Blood Horse voters had a voting controversy still held to this day on this. There was one idiot who instead of giving Sec the extra # 1 vote, voted him 14th of all things, which when applied to their point system gave MOW the #1 slot. I think MOW is still one of the true greats, But Sec was a speed phenom. He had nearly 5 seconds on MOW at 12 furlongs so given track speed and what ever you choose to equal things, Sec still beats MOW by 8 lengths plus. No horse could catch Sec.

the owner of MOW son War Admiral thought the same way,his horse had won the the tc etc.He was the son of MOW no horse could beat him. After meeting all his condtions for the match race,Sea Buscuit beat him fair an square. So the talent he passed on got beaten and loses all credibility to this day.............to all their claims..............btw SEC has the distinction of winning the TC in record time,in all three races that still stands to this day.Something MOW cannot claim to his f.............

Man O' War was chosen number one over Secretariat because he passed on his talent. Secretariat didn't. Man O' War would've beaten Secretariat anyday anyways.

Bloodhorse picked a panel to pick the top 100. Man O War edged out Secretariat for the top spot because one jackass put Secretariat 14th! No way in Hell Mano could have beaten Secretariat. He lost races, sure, but he was ill in three he lost, was disqualified in another for interference, and knocked nearly to the ground in his first race. Watch the '73 Belmont and Preakness. That will answer any questions about the "Superhorse", Secretariat.
