Wise Dan, the reigning two-time Horse of the Year he trains for breeder-owner Morton Fink, returned from a 15-week layoff to hold off late-running long shot Optimizer and win the Grade 2, $250,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap by a nose at Saratoga.

I don't think Wise Dan understands the concept of losing.

Holy smokes what a horse. 3 months removed from colic surgery, 4 months from last racing, and handicapped at NINE pounds more than the entire field. Oh, and less than 1/5 off the track record.

Why is there a fake crowd noise at 1:30 it goes from no crowd to an apparent crowd cheering... then at 1:50 no crowd at all.. cant be all those cheering on the rail. It's like a laugh track for a sitcom

My gut feeling is the rest of this season for Wise Dan might end up looking a lot like Goldikova's final season of racing. Still highly competitive, but with some losses. I agree with Lee SOG below in that even though this was Wise Dan's first start coming off a layoff, I doubt he'll come on massively for the run given his age now. He may just not be the same horse any longer that we've seen over the past couple of seasons. If Variety Club shows up for this year's BC Mile, which is a race his connections say they're targeting, Wise Dan will have to improve quite a bit above this effort to beat him, and I'm not sure this effort would be good enough to beat the same Toronado we saw win this year's G1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal-Ascot either, in my honest opinion.
