From Sports Illustrated, "Putting The Beans On The Fire" by William Legget, June 14, 1976 - "Bold Forbes not only ran far, he also ran very wide because of a quirk of temperament. And he ran on three and a half feet because part of his right rear hoof had to be cut away after being cracked earlier in the year." I did not know about the hoof problem, I wonder if that may have contributed to Bold Forbes injury and loss in the Preakness?
When Bold Forbes died there were two coffins: one for the body and one for his heart. I think that Bo had nothing else in the Belmont, but his heart won. If you notice, the last 50 meters Cordero did not hit Bo, only show the wip. That was cause Bo was so tired. The thing is the Belmont was not 1 and 9/16, just the right distance for great Bo.
How do you get a sprinter home going 1 1/2? Easy a top notch ride, top notch training, and one tough horse who just didn't want to get beat. I can't stress enough that he was a sprinter! Cordero has said "Believe me he was a sprinter". He said he wasn't the best horse he ever rode, but he the most guts of any horse he ever rode. A sprinter winning the Belmont going 12 F.????
How do you get a pure sprinter to go 1-1/2 miles? Give it to Cordero in his prime. The 1-1/4 was 2/5 of a second slower than his Derby win. At the head of the stretch Junior was imploring him "Take me to the 8th pole and I'll take you home!" That's exactly what he did. He carried the horse the last furlong. Just watch him almost fly out of the saddle with hustle. Spectacular ride.
If memory serves, this NYRA-site recording has the the camera work and supers from the CBS-TV broadcast matched with Dave Johnson's track call. On a few of the site's recordings they use the video and/or calls from the live network broadcast when they don't have the NYRA tape. My favorite is when YouTube will have two different calls of the same event - e.g., Marshall Cassidy AND Dave Johnson calling a Travers or Belmont.
Of course, that's exactly what I mean. Secretariat was a class apart, his show in the Belmont Stakes was incredible, and when a horse like Bold Forbes didn't fraction as fast and had to hold on to dear life in the end, it just shows you how great was Big Red. Hell, Sham was a great horse and he was destroyed by the pace.
Bold Forbes, of course, is the "Secretariat" of Puerto Rico. :D
That makes you appreciate Secretariat's victory all the more. His 3/4 mile fractions were 1 second and 2 fifths faster than this one, and he still won by 31 lengths in world record time.
Cordero always said that Bold Forbes was a pure sprinter. He said he did it in pure guts. Who said sons and grandsons of Bold Ruler can win over a mile distance?
Yeah, that would have been tight if was an 8th longer. It seemed like Bold Forbes still had a little in the tank though, he looked to be fighting back somewhat when they came up beside him. Glad you enjoyed it. Take care.
Great video, cf! Just imagine if the Belmont Stakes was 1 Mile & 9/16, Mackenzie Bridge would've won or Cordero could implore Bold Forbes some more? Thanks!
