I don't honestly agree. Pendil was beaten a short head - I mean, he stayed a lot better than those that finished behind him. It's all hindsight I know, but if Pitman had held onto him longer he would have won going away and no-one would have even suggested that he didn't stay, just as townstreet's suggesting that The Dikler ran out of puff the year before because he went too early. Absolute tragedy when he was brought down the following year, cantering at the 3rd last.
quite a few could be added to that group One Man for sure and even more so Tied Cottage who actually managed to win then lose it for failing a doping test.
wayward lad just didnt stay further than 3 miles and certainly not at cheltenham; he started to go sideways at the finish. I would say Pendil didnt quite stay.
Thhe 1973 Gold Cup always seems to be called the race that Pendil lost rather than the race that The Dikler won. That is a real shame. The Dikler had his fair share of misfortune at Cheltenham. He would have won the race by a mile the year before if Barry Brogan had not had a brainstorm at the top of the hill and made a premature bid for victory by putting his foot on the accelerator far too early.
Pendil was a great horse but so was The Dikler, especially at Cheltenham.

Is the early faller, Clever Scot the same horse who once beat Red Rum in a hurdle race at Aintree? (one of only four horses who ever beat him there)

I think it was Richard Pitman On Pendil, 1973 just was not his year, this race and Crisp in the Grand National.

Pendil probably between him and wayward lad the best horse never to have won the gold cup.
