Doncaster Mile G1 3U OPEN ($3,000,000), 1600m 1:39.59
Race Synopsis: Sacred Falls made is successive Doncaster Mile wins, again producing his best in heavy going. He was ridden patiently by Zac Purton and settled well back in the large field being 18th on the rails to the 800m. He was travelling well and saved many lengths going between runners rounding the home turn. He cut back to the rails at the 300m, then rallied strongly to take the lead at the 100m and fought on to score a strong (half length) win. Royal Descent raced in 14th place (wide out with cover) from her difficult barrier (18). She improved well (still wide) rounding the home turn and looked the winner when she put in a strong run to hit the lead at the 200m but was out-gamed by the winner in the closing stages for a strong (half length) second. Weary travelled nicely about tenth, wide with cover. He fanned wide rounding the home turn, got to third at the 150m and battled on well from that point to hold that position to the post. Hawkspur did not show much early pace and was in front of three runners in the 20-horse field at the 800m. He fanned wide nearing the home turn and picked-up late ground to grab fourth nearing the post. He should appreciate stepping back up in distance. Ninth Legion was a handy third on the rails, took the lead shortly after turning for home and then battled on fairly well to for fifth (beaten five and half lengths). The Japanese mare Hana’s Goal was again slowly away and was last in the 20-horse field to the home turn. She eased across heels at the 300m and made good ground over the latter stages for sixth. Messene went forward from his wide barrier (17) and was caught wide without cover in about fourth place. But he struggled from the 300m and then just battled on for seventh after a wide trip, racing for the first time in heavy going.
