Nice pick!! It's fun to pick great horses before they're well known. It's part of the challenge in racing that makes handicapping so much fun.

What I find funny is Flying Paster ran in the 1980 San Luis Rey Stakes at Santa Anita which is 1 1/2 miles on the turf. He was a heavy favorite and most of the handicappers comments were "no Spectacular Bid in here" however there was another horse in the race who was just coming in to his own as a super horse. His name? John Henry. John Henry won at 7-1,the Paster ran fifth at even money. I was happy that day, I had $20 win on old John.

Yeah, pretty astonishing to watch, he seemed to glide over the muck. Thanks for stopping by.

Flying Paster got to the top of the stretch with a full head of steam and the Bid effortlessly ran away from him.

It's fun to read comments such as these. Delp was quite the character, a very knowledgeable horseman. Thanks for watching. Take care.

Wow, great memories. I was new in college in Los Angeles that year. It was an incredibly wet spring. My roommates and I were sandbagging cliffs to help prevent the homes from sliding. Racing wasn't always a priority. I didn't remember this race in the slop. Thanks for posting it. And good to see a smiling Bud Delp at the presentation. I always liked him. Racing needs memorable characters.
