R9 RANDWICK04 October 2014
The Metropolitan G1 3U OPEN ($405,000), 2400m 2:26.51
Race Synopsis: Junoob put up a good effort to score in this fast-run 2400m race. He began well and travelled nicely in fourth place before moving up strongly approaching the 600m. He raced clear on turning for home and held a big break at the 200m. He then fought back gamely, after making his early move, to win by half a length in quick time of 2:26.51, which was only 0.15 outside the Randwick course record. His stablemate Opinion was back in sixth place on the rails, fanned deep at the home turn and was still conceding the leader about four lengths at the 250m. But he kept plugging on gamely, getting to within half a length of the winner at the post and also lodged an unsuccessful protest. Araldo was back near last in the 16-horse field and was giving the leader about 12 lengths at the 600m. He got between runners at the 300m and plugged home well for a good third. Kingdoms was tenth to the turn and made ground without threatening for (4.4 lengths) fourth. Disclaimer also made up late ground coming from last to finish (4.6 lengths) fifth. The favourite Spillway was a handy fifth to the 600m but was hard ridden from that point and faded to finish a disappointing ninth, beaten seven lengths, looking tested by the fast-run 2400m race while La Amistad was midfield and also failed to run on after being checked nearing the turn to finish 12th.
