Australian Derby G1 3 OPEN ($2,131,000), 2400m 2:33.67 | |
Race Synopsis: New Zealand-trained Tavago settled particularly well in third place on the rails from his inside barrier (1). He improved along the inner nearing the home turn and took a narrow lead on straightening. He then raced away from the 200m and went on to score an impressive win. Jameka was deep in the early stages from wide barrier (12) before settling outside the leader (Oh So Splendido). She moved up well nearing the home turn, looked a strong chance at the 300m and then kept fighting on gamely from the 200m for second. She stood no chance with the winner. Tally raced wide without cover in sixth place before tracking up nicely rounding the home turn. He was under riding from the 300m and kept battling on well to take the minor placing. The odds-on favourite Tarzino moved up wide in the early stages going to second before easing to race in fourth with cover. He made a strong move deep coming to the home turn but was soon under pressure on straightening. He then battled on for fourth, beaten seven lengths, racing below his previous impressive form. |
Tavago won the 2016 ATC Australian Derby.
