Race Synopsis: Santa Ana Lane followed his impressive late-closing victory in The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) at Morphettville on 19 May with another Group One victory here, his third from 27 starts to date. He settled a bit closer from a better barrier (3) in seventh place on the rails, got along the inner from the home turn, hit the front approaching the 100m and drew clear to win well. Andrew Noblet-trained mare Super Cash, who had finished fourth behind Santa Ana Lane in The Goodwood, raced in fifth (wide with cover), moved up well at the home turn and then battled gamely for a very good second. The favourite Champagne Cuddles enjoyed a good trip from her inside barrier (1) in third place on the rails, briefly looked dangerous when she put in a run on straightening and then fought well to take third after seeming to have had every chance. Crack Me Up was tenth, between runners, made a wide move nearing the home turn and kept running on really well for fourth, beaten just over two lengths. Perast led the field and despite a tendency to hang out a bit from the 600m, was still on front on straightening. He then held on for (2.2 lengths) fifth. Shillelagh was midfield to the home turn and battled on along the rails for (3.2 lengths) sixth while multiple Group One winner Impending raced in eighth place, looked for a split on turning for home but was never fully clear and went to the post under his top weight (57.5kg) in restricted room for (3.4 lengths) seventh. |
The Anthony Freedman-trained Santa Ana Lane collected his third Group 1 for 2017-18 winning the Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on June.
