WRONG. Horses are not forced to do anything. Have you ever even watced racing? They love running in a group and jumping things. The odd ones, who don't, are awkward and obviosuly show little interest.

It ticks me off that Wikipedia has Red Rum as having "fallen only once". I appreciate they took this from an alternative source on the Internet, but it's still wrong. He unseated his rider. Rummy never went down EVER.

I love old clips from 70's with people on track. Everything looks lovely and simple compared to the very difficult PC world of today.

Each race meeting is attended by someone from the RSPCA. If horses were treated as badly as you think, they would have something to say. Red Rum himself lived to 30 but had pedal osteitis which was cured by galloping into the sea at southporth. However if horse racing offends you why download and watch a clip about horseracing that's 38 years old?

What a load of tripe! Horses run together in the wild in herds.

and then he refused to leave the starting stalls...he was then retired as a hack. Thefriendlybarber, an ex point to pointer, who loved racing, was transfered to showjumping, where he fell broke both knees and was destroyed. you can't make sweeping comments such as it should be banned, some horses like it, some don't....hope al that is clear :)

I trained to be a jockey...horse do, on the whole enjoy racing. Some of course don't. For example, I used to ride a horse called Preben Fur...now he ran in the Grand National, and really enjoyed racing and jumping, despite the fact that he was very slow...could jump well though. I also, in the same yard rode a horse called Tadbir....He was totally the opposite, he refused over fences, refused over hurdles, then we put him on the flat, and at Beverley racecourse

Only seen this race once before - thank you so much for posting it! This is when steeplechasing was steeplechasing - I know how trite that sounds, but am I wrong?

Definitely his best performance away from Aintree. I actually cried when they announced the photo. And to think later that season, he won both the Grand National and the Scottish National within two weeks of each other, carrying top weight on both occasions.

Unbelievably, the Red Rum/Crisp rematch two weeks before this at Doncaster (which Crisp won) wasn't shown live, although four other races on the same card were - they threw it away at 1pm *before* the ITV Seven. Now TV has so much power, it's unbelievable that such things happened.

Who actually won the 1973 Hennessy Gold Cup? This is a race I used to watch when it was shown on BBC Grandstand. It is reminiscent to that of the recent Grade 1 Betfair Chase at Haydock on Saturday 21st November between Imperial Commander and eventual winner and Cheltenham Gold Cup hero, Kauto Star.
