The winner, Lesley Ann, though he liked soft ground and Cheltenham, failed to train on as a Gold Cup horse. Did win some races after this, though ran poorly in the 1982 Gold Cup and was retired the following season.

Easter Eel was regarded as one of John Francome's bankers for this meeting. He made a late start to chasing in 1980/81 at the age of 9, having missed the previous two seasons with leg trouble. Prior to this race, he had won 4 out of 5 novice chases, including the Reynoldstown at Ascot and went off a well backed 2/1 fav for the Sun Alliance. Afterwards, he suffered respiratory problems and only won once more, at Warwick the following season.

Special Cargo in his novice days here, finished 3rd having won 3 times that season. Then was plagued by a succession of training problems before coming back for that unforgettable Whitbread triumph in his final race.

A race filled with horses of future fame! Thanks very much for posting it! What's Easter Eel famous for? I've heard his name mentioned many times but my knowledge of his career is a bit lacking. I take it that gap in my knowledge ought to be filled in? - Thanks!

Thanks for posting this. What a great field. Some great big race winners came out of this. It's very rare these days for the RSA (as it's now called) to throw up such strength in depth. Corbiere, what a gladiator!

Wayward lad went off 2nd favourite here, in his first run at Cheltenham. This was also the beginning of what became regarded as his Cheltenham hoodoo. In fairness, he was placed in two very good Gold Cups, most memorably when 2nd to Dawn Run and giving her weight. The winner, Lesley Ann, did like the course but failed to train on into a Gold Cup horse
