I was THERE. Shame there's no crowd shots. Habibti was the centre of attention, but I remember Petong walking round the paddock with a sort of "tough old pro" look about him. I haven't thought about this race in donkeys years, but it all comes back.
silly me no sooner had i posted last comment when realised my typo he won the wokingham at Ascot i meant to say backed him heavily for the Stewards Cup
Nor me I backed him in a double with Khairpour who won the Hardwicke at Ascot then backed him heavily for the Wokingham and then again in this. I recently managed to purchase his other wins and that of Khairpour and the enjoyment dont fade much seeing them even after all these years. ts because of Petong I followed his son Paris House a few years later who also won me many a pound. Thanks for the comment glad it brought back memories thats why I post the vids.
Indeed, I don't think I've ever actually seen a Haydock Sprint Cup pre-1986 before and it doesn't seem right at all to have a sudden turn so soon in a sprint like this.
Also, until 1979 it was run at the very end of the flat season and top-class horses sometimes got stuck in the mud, while Be Friendly was prevented from winning it a third time when it was waterlogged in 1968. Come a long way, this race.
group 2 eh ?
didnt know they used to race round a bend in this race, you live and learn.
i wonder if you could post the 92 running if you have it, won by sheikh albadou
who was also ridden by bruce raymond.

I recall following Petong that season. He rarely let me down when it came to taking money from my Bookie. Very brave Horse.
