Poor Anthony Powell on Royal Appointment. With no outside running rails and seemingly miles between the inside part of the track and the perimeter of the course he had no hope of keeping his horse with the others once his saddle had slipped!

It makes amazing viewing this race, not just because of its historical importance but also because of the way security was so layed back in Ireland then. There appear to be no running rails (only small wooden markers every now and again) and nothing to keep the spectators in the country away from the runners. Look at those boys running alongside the field at the 5:25 mark! The home straight is littered with people and show horses with no rails between them and the runners!

Can't believe this is the first time I've ever watched this race - I had goosebumps big time!!
I looked after Bentom Boy later in his racing career, when he came to yard I was working at just outside Morpeth, Northumberland.
Bless you Bentley - you really did win the big race in style!

I have just watched it and it was an historic moment for this lady jockey.

Yes The Irish National always a great race to watch. This was one of the biggest upsets ever in this race but it was certainly historic for Ann Ferris who won the Sweeps hurdle on Irian a few years earlier.
