    This race is now at the start of the season rather than near the end so you could say its the first major handicap of the jumps season instead of the Paddy Power.

    I think Monksfield may have been the first winner, actually - this race was introduced in 1978 along with the May Day holiday, and the first running had pretty much all the 70s hurdling greats, a concentration of quality it wouldn't see again. Haydock certainly doesn't provide the chasing test it did until 2007, though it obviously saw one of the great battles only this season.

    there are now too many end-of-season big races, so we don't get top-class hurdlers competing for this any more. I think Monksfield won this way back. And Haydock's lost its NH edge nowadays, sadly.
