Been awhile since Variety Club has been beaten on a racetrack, but this a
typical example that's become commonplace over the past few seasons at
Meydan of how horses who thrive on the tapeta surface are consistently able
to beat horses who are officially rated much higher and more talented than
they are, and that's not a knock whatsoever at the filly Shuruq. She ran a
great race and IMO should now be considered a very legitimate player in the
G2 Godolphin Mile on world cup night. All that being said, I thought the
end game for Variety Club at Meydan had always been to take a shot at the
G1 Dubai World Cup? That in mind, I don't know why he wasn't running in the
G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 3 at 2000 meters instead of this race to get a
sense of how he'd fare against some of the same horses who will be in this
year's Dubai World Cup field? The route Variety Club has taken at this
year's Carnival through the G3 Firebreak Stakes at 1600 meters and the G3
Burj Nahaar at 1600 meters seems more akin to a horse being pointed at the
G2 Godolphin Mile instead of the G1 Dubai World Cup, IMO.
