Over the years, horses who've shipped to Dubai just to run only on world cup night have fared well in the G1 Sheema Classic & G1 Dubai World Cup. But it's been a different story entirely concerning the G1 Dubai Duty Free. I went back and checked as far back as the last 6 renewals of this race, 2008-2013, and among 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place finishers in the Duty Free the numbers are staggering how poorly horses have fared that shipped to Dubai to run only in the Duty Free vs. horses who went into the Duty Free with multiple Carnival runs. In 6 renewals, only 3 shippers have finished top 3 in the race: Cityscape-1st in 2012, Dargina-2nd in 2008, and Giofra-3rd in 2013. Here's the stats of the other top 3 finishers who had multiple runs at the Dubai Carnival during that same period: Jay Peg-1st, Archipenko-3rd in 2008. Gladiatorus-1st, Presvis-2nd, Alexandros-3rd in 2009. Al Shemali-1st, Bankable-2nd, Imbongi-3rd in 2010. Presvis-1st, River Jetez-2nd, Wigmore Hall(won the 2011 Jebel-Hatta) in 2011. Mutahadee-2nd, City Style-3rd in 2012. Sajjhaa-1st, The Apache-2nd in 2013. Based on the numbers from the last 6 renewals it seems that at least 2 or more runs at the Dubai Carnival are necessary if you expect your horse to make the frame in the Duty Free.
