listing names fail...what else do you have...you know... objective data... the prevailing weight of expert opinions??? ... or is it merely your keyboard work between cheese straws and onion stix???

stop with Man O'War... and change "better" to "co-equal" and you will not be a Secretariat hater or contrarian troll. otherwise, you will need to beg to even matter in this discussion

I beg to differ. Kelso, Man O' War and Native Dancer can be said to be better, Count Fleet, Tom Fool, Sysonby and many, many more close.

As would Round Table, Silver Charm, Native Dancer... The list is endless.

Slew was the closest---but he never had what "Big Red" did. GOD sent us him when the country needed him. There were some great horses that decade for sure. Another year Sham would have won the triple crown any other year--but he had the misfortune to race the same year Secretariat. was. A horse race is beauty in motion. The thunder of their hooves is amazing. Horses are overall beautiful and amazing animals. Thank GOD for giving them to us to enjoy.

Alydar would've been the Triple Crown winner, save that he was born the year of Affirmed. The 70s produced some of the most amazing racehorses in history.

Coming into this race Sensitive Prince was undefeated! Believe It had crushed the Wood Memorial field and then you had Affirmed and Alydar. Alydar would have been a 2/3 year old champ almost any other year, but the same is true for Believe It! Alydar beat him in the Tremont and Florida Derby, he creamed Alydar in the Remson. Believe It could also have been going for the triple crown in most other years- THAT is how great the division was!

Affirmed won the races but alydar turned out to be a much better stallion, producing more and better winners. Both horses were winners

You always thought Alydar would win in the home stretch but what a run but Affirmed.

Uh, alessandrokaka, you're simply wrong. After the Belmont, Affirmed and Alydar faced each other just one more time, in the ill-fated Travers Stakes of that same year. Affirmed finished ahead, but was disqualified due to interference, and Alydar was made the winner. I have no idea where you got this "Arch of Triumph handicap" idea from.

every time I see this I still think Alydar is going to pass him.

Affirmed was an amazing horse. Alydar was a good competitor as well. This is horse racing at its finest.

That's your opinion. I find Alydar simply facinating.

His jockey must have been drunk that day. Affirmed was the better horse.

Alydar defeated Affirmed by 25 lenghs at the Arch of Triumph handicap probably two months after the Belmont.......After the race, Affirmed's jockey commented the fpllowing: "Alydar is a much better horse than Affirmed, We are just lucky!

I doubt it was broken considering he still showed a lot of heart in other races after the Belmont.

  • BlancoConHuevos Says:

Affirmed owned Alydar, they said Alydar's heart got broken. I loved it when they would make excuses for Alydar because the more people that beleived it the better price on Affirmed

Such tactical advantage for Affirmed every time against Alydar. This race was a classic example, allowed to lead in fractions like 47:3 and 1:11:4. I don't know how Veitch expected Alydar to be able to loop outside and run down a great horse like Affirmed when the race/pace sets up like that. In the Belmont he stayed close but that almost doesn't count since it was a plodding 50 second half mile yet Alydar still stayed slightly behind Affirmed.
