R9 RANDWICK | 05 October 2013 |
The Metropolitan G1 3U OPEN ($405,000), 2400m 2:32.07 | |
Race Synopsis: Seville enjoyed a perfect run in third spot on the rails, following a moderate tempo (first 1800m 1:57.88 - 13.09 per 200m). He then got a rails run on turning for home, challenged at the 200m and fought strongly in the closing stages to win by half length (leaders sprinting last 600m in 34.82). Julienas led and steadied the pace, picked-up the tempo from the 600m, was only headed at the 50m point and held on for second. Sneak A Peek was fourth, one out and one back, most of the way to the 600m. He moved up three wide at the turn and kept battling on quite well to take third. Ironstein was ninth one off the rails most of the way to the 600m. He fanned wide at the turn, challenged at the 200m before battling on for fourth. Moriarty was eighth to the 600m, he switched wide at the 250m and did well to make ground in the sprint home for fifth, being disadvantaged by the slow early pace. The favourite Prince Cheri was a handy fifth on the rails, was blocked on straightening but got clear at the 200m but he only finished fairly from that point for one and a half lengths sixth. |

It was good to see Seville finally stepped up to 12f in Australia. This is the kind of trip he's always gonna be most effective over, IMO, although they dropped him back down to 10f again for the G1 Cox Plate after this win, and then stepped him up to 2 miles for the G1 Melbourne Cup after that. Seriously though, if you look back to when Seville was still racing in Europe it was in races at 12f and further he did his best racing. He finished 2nd in the G1 Irish Derby & G1 Grand Prix De Paris at 12f, 3rd in the G2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at 12f, and 4th in the G1 English St Leger at 14-1/2f.
