Grandeur trainer Jeremy Noseda on Tuesday made comments on the Racing Post
web-site that were critical of Gary Stevens ride on Grandeur in the
Manhattan Handicap, describing Steven's ride as "ill judged." I've always
thought Gary Stevens was among America's all-time great jockeys and I've
rarely ever had anything negative to say about his riding over the years,
but even before Noseda came out with those comments on Tuesday I had
already said something very similar about Steven's ride on Grandeur in the
Manhattan Handicap myself. Certainly wasn't Gary's finest hour in the
saddle. Noseda said he felt like Stevens held up a clearly full of run
Grandeur for too long and left him too much to do in the home straight, and
personally I agree with Noseda. The only time I've seen Grandeur ridden
worse than this in the United States was when Garrett Gomez cost him the G1
Hollywood Derby in 2012, dropping him out to almost the parking lot that
day and asking Grandeur to make up an unbelievable amount of ground in the
stretch at Hollywood Park. And he still very nearly overcame the deficit,
finishing 2nd and closing to within 1-1/2 lengths of Unbridled Command
under a very poorly judged ride that day from Garrett Gomez.
